Blocks

Blocks was a series developed during my thesis. Drawing upon my previous Windows work, I set out to capture an entire city block. What followed was three distinct explorations.

1.    Accordion Block, 2021.

First, and to be honest most ‘low hanging fruit’, was the exploration of book form. I designed an accordion style book that allowed readers to unfold the city block, reinforcing its grandeur and the absurdity of its capture.

2.    Interactive Block, 2021.

Second, an interaction exploration. Taking advantage of my coding knowledge, I superimposed two versions of ‘my block’ into a single experience. This allowed viewers to further investigate the piece, inviting them to peer deeper by revealing windows through hover interactions. If desired, viewers could take a screen grab and create their very own window images, thus referencing back to my original works.

3.    Proposal Of Space, 2021.

Third, was a series of ‘Proposals of Space’. Leveraging an empty lot within my captured city block, I layered images from my personal photographic archive to explore possibilities within the ‘empty’ space. This became an exploration into the affordances granted to designers, while creating social commentary through selection of different landscapes and buildings.
